IKEBANA in OTARU

In the town of Otaru, where there are many historic buildings, take a moment to quietly reflect on yourself.
Through flowers that reflect the present state of Hokkaido, why not try ikebana, which expresses the beauty of Japan?
No experience is necessary, even for beginners. You can participate with no preparation, so it’s perfect for a break during your travels.
In the historic town of Otaru, let’s discover your sensibility and sense of style together.

History & Roots

IKEBANA” is a traditional Japanese style of flower arrangement.

It originated from the practice of offering flowers to the Buddha in temples, and later developed as a refined art enjoyed by nobles and samurai. Eventually, it spread to ordinary households as well.

The most common style involves arranging flowers in the tokonoma, an alcove that is a characteristic feature of traditional Japanese architecture.

Ikebana is cherished as both a form of cultural education and a traditional art. It expresses the natural beauty of plants and brings a sense of the seasons into the home.

LOCATION

The Suhara Residence, situated close to the renowned Shokunin-zaka (Artisan Slope), is a historic mansion that was once the home of a notable merchant. Fans of Japanese cinema might recognize it as a filming location from the beloved movie Love Letter, which has gained popularity not just in Japan but throughout Asia. This beautiful Japanese-style house, featuring a carefully tended garden, also includes Western-style rooms, showcasing a delightful fusion of traditional and contemporary elements that reflect the essence of Otaru.

PHILOSOPHY  心得

The essence of ikebana lies in expressing the beauty of nature and the changing seasons.
It represents yin and yang, and evokes a sense of the universe in the background.”Yin represents stillness, while Yang expresses movement. By arranging plants and flowers in a vessel, ikebana conveys the depth and expansion of philosophical thought.”

My passion for flowers and plants is my foundation.

I began studying Ikebana at the age of 20 and have since obtained a teaching certification.
While my Ikebana classes are based on the Ikenobo style, I encourage students to develop their own unique style. I hope to share with you the joy of decorating your home with flowers grown in my garden.
I am starting a small flower shop in Zenibako to assist with any concerns you may have about flowers and greenery.

STYLE 作法

“In today’s session, you’ll try Ikenobo ikebana, a traditional and well-known school. You’ll use three flower lengths—90, 60, and 30 cm—to represent SHIN(心・真), SOE(添え・副え), and TAI(体・躰), and also show the harmony of yin and yang.”
